K'ng hSi was recently injured in a shuttle accident in an incident with a Klingon warbird above the Djinski homeworld. Her physical injuries were not serious, but the resultant psychological trauma from the confrontation left her with residual blanks in her short-term memory... this is perhaps related to the injuries sustained in her stay with the Orions. It is not thought to be of a severity which precludes her returning to duty at this time. The gaps in her memory tend to center around the tragic circumstances surrounding her engagement to one Mark Fletcher, killed in the line of duty during their tenure on the USS MERIDIAN, and a more recent, less tragic, romance with Maj. Wesson Smith, SFMC. Dr. Lohit M'Reail SFHQ" "Ens. K'ng hSi appeared before me this date for final physical before release to starship duty. Testing revealed continued macular degeneration which will ultimately result in the necessity for ocular implants at some future date. Treatment was given which will slow the damage. It has not developed to the point where it need be a concern at this time. Otherwise, Ens. K'ng hSi is in excellent physical condition with no restrictions. See Psychological Evaluation for more information. It is as though she believes her time is short and she must do everything in half the time allotted to her. It would serve her well to spend as much time on social development as she does on career, especially given her background. Lydia Caldwell Instructor, Holcombe Institute" "Karal has a single mindedness of purpose which, I'm sure, harkens back to the instability of her life during her time with the Orions. She must exercise due diligence to ensure her determination does not appear to be pure stubbornness. Cmdr. T.S. Pk'rel Starfleet Academy" Psychological Data: Beliefs: Agnostic, leaning to Atheist Ambitions: Command Annoyances: Weakness - in self or others Hobbies: Historical Research; Swimming Phobias: Being incapacitated, immobilized. Claustrophobia. Special Skills: Class 1A Shuttle pilot Confidential: "Female, survivor, from Orion slaver 'Monody': Subject unresponsive to initial exam. Appears to be completely unaware of and uninterested in the years before her being taken by the Orions and kept confined in the cargo hold of their ship. Subject has been beaten, as evidenced by both old, new and intermediate scar tissue on legs, back, and shoulders. Remedial surgery indicated for worst, saving lesser for cosmetic repair at a later date. Psychological evaluation indicated, with several years therapy suspected necessary. Patient given first aid, treated for malnutrition and parasitic infestation as well as unspecified minor STD. Dr. Belinda Pope CMO, USS Yorktown" "K'ng hSi, Karalyn: Cadet K'ng hSi's psychological evaluation is made with the attached notation that she has been through extensive therapy for the trauma (both physical and psychological) she suffered at the hands of the Orions. At the present time, she has no lingering effects from that trauma, which can be directly attributed to the skill of the therapist who was initially assigned to her case. Her adjustment to her current situation, indeed her desire to remain with her adoptive family, seems extreme given the circumstances, yet I can find no reason to deny her full clearance for her entrance into training with Starfleet. Dr. IG'Chal Sorkan, Ph.D. Sorkan, Marcus & Leaderer" Comments: As a result of her three years as a 'guest' of the Orion slavers, Ensign K'ng hSi's education was delayed. As a member, however distant to the throne, of the Royal Family of Beta Bessari IV, she was never intended as a recruit for service in Starfleet, but after being rescued by the crew of the USS Yorktown, she was 'adopted' by Capt. Michael Putter, who raised her as his own daughter and encouraged her in her interest to seek a career in Starfleet. Her ordeal at the hands of the Orions caused an understandable period of transient amnesia, and for the first year of her life on Terra, she remembered nothing of her former life. Three years after entering Starfleet Academy, a diplomatic squabble' between the UFP and the Ruling Council of the Betan Worlds broke out and K'ng hSi was deported as a 'threat to security'. After another delay, she has returned and completed her education and is ready to assume her duties as a member of Starfleet. These delays, although no fault of her own, have been very frustrating to Ensign K'ng hSi, and there is some small personal resentment that she is much older than the 'typical' graduate of the Academy. Ensign K'ng hSi is a very private, serious person who takes herself all too seriously at times. She must be reminded, occasionally, that she does not have to work all four daily shifts. Regardless her skill, it is not recommended that she be assigned constant shuttle-pilot duty due to her continued battle with claustrophobia... she is a classic case of 'over compensation' in this area. Given the situation at the time this arrest and detention were accomplished, with Beta Besari's ruling counsel demanding her extradition and the UFP charging her with everything from spying to insubordination, it is understandable that she was under a great deal of duress at the time. Thinking herself in serious danger, which she might very well have been, Karalyn disappeared from the Academy dormitory to which she had been assigned, acting on a tip (we suspect from her adopted brother). It is understandable, also, that she might have sought to alleviate her stress several days later, after hiding and running for hours, through an episode of drinking. The 'assault' charge, while never carried through, was the most serious, yet it was settled along with the others when Karalyn was finally returned to her homeworld. It is my belief she was an unfortunate victim of a political snafu between diplomats, and as such should not be punished for the rest of her life. Karalyn will make a fine officer under anyone's command and will serve with a dedication and determination that will satisfy even the most demanding of COs. Cmdr. Kyle Williams Starfleet Diplomatic Corps"
