Several months later, Stella was offered a promotion to Rear Admiral and a billet at Star Fleet Intelligence on Earth. To spend more time with Sal, she left her command of the U.S.S. Tutenkahmen, and Jerome secured a professorship at Star Fleet Academy. Stella rose quickly through the ranks of SFI to vice admiral, and assistant to the chief of intelligence, Admiral Alynna Nechayev. When Nechayev was promoted to CINCSF, Stella became CINCSFI, and was promoted to Admiral. Meanwhile, Jerome had become a professor at the prestigious Berkley University archeology department, and eventually became a senior fellow and honorary professor at the Vulcan Science Academy, writing a series of groundbreaking papers for the Vulcan Journal of Archeology. Sal applied to Starfleet with excellent test scores, ranging from the 87th to 92nd percentiles, and a mother who had recently been promoted to one of the highest ranking and most influential positions in Starfleet Command. He was, needless to say, accepted and, by sophomore year, on the command track. His record for the first three years of academy was spotless, excellent, and utterly unremarkable. with the sole exception of a minor in Engineering, a deviation from the tradition of command officers minor in piloting. The last quarter of his senior year, Sal was given command of the U.S.S. Valiant, a training vessel. While on a routine mission deep inside Federation space, the Valiant responded to a distress call from a civilian freighter, and executed a by-the-book rescue operation flawlessly. The cadets abroad were all given commendations, and Sal was singled out for recognition by the commandant of the academy. However, shortly after returning from the Valiant cruise, Sal abruptly switched to the engineering track, dropping all command courses on his schedule. He chose a minor in command solely because he had already acquired enough credits to do so, and had to devote all his class time to engineering courses in order to graduate on time. A few days later, his mother abruptly announced her retirement to become an administrator for the San Francisco Bay school district. Psychological Profile (Level 4 clearance required) Sal recently decided to change his career track drastically, from the command track and an apparent path to Starfleet Command to the engineering courses. I have had extensive interviews with him to attempt to determine the cause of this decision. While I do not know the exact cause, at some point in the recent past, Sal has developed an almost vicious cynicism of the fleet command. He now expresses a desire to become chief engineer of a ship in the fleet, and continue to work in the fleet for the remainder of his career. He expresses a disdain for what he calls "the brass" that would seem unusual in the son of an admiral. I believe a cause of this may be something he learned from his mother that involves her command of SFI. Whatever the cause of this metamorphosis, I believe Sal's passion for engineering to be genuine. He is not seriously withdrawn from his friends and immediate superiors, and sustains an active social life. He did, however, end a fairly long-term romantic relationship recently, and I believe there may be deeper emotional issues that should be a concern for the counselor on his next billet. I must emphasize, though, that none of these issues will, in my opinion, affect Sal's ability to be an excellent engineer and effective member of a team aboard a starship or base. --Dr. William Burroughs Psychologist, Starfleet Academy Stardate 120113.1017 Hobbies Sal is something of a history affectionado, and took several advanced courses on Earth History in specific, at the academy. He also has several books by the 20th century comedian Dennis Miller. Sal plays poker, chess, darts, and various other games, and regularly runs several miles. NPRG Background Material After rescuing the freighter while in command of the Valiant, Sal learned of the existence of Section 31 from a mortally wounded passenger who was an operative for the organization. This event is what caused his metamorphosis from future admiral to engineer. I want to emphasize that Sal learned no huge secrets about the federation other than Section 31's existence and charter. I don't plan to involve Sal in the group, I simply used them as a catalyst to turn Sal into an engineer. It also allowed Sal to confront his mother about her knowledge of the organization. This confrontation prompted her retirement.
